It is on the banks of this enchanting river that the first rock art sites, dating back to prehistoric times, can be found. The Prehistoric Rock Art sites in the Côa Valley have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1998.
These archaeological treasures are veritable open-air museums, housing various artistic representations such as animals, silhouettes of people and hunting scenes that you will have the opportunity to visit.
One of the most emblematic rock art sites in the region is the Canada do Inferno. Located on the left bank of the Côa, it has 46 engraved rocks, 39 of which are known to be Palaeolithic figurations. Did you know that this was the first rock art site identified? At the end of 1991. It is in this beautiful place that all the phases of Palaeolithic art in the Côa are depicted.

From here, you'll walk another 3 kilometers on Portuguese cobblestones, through these works that are an integral part of the history of the discovery of the art of the Côa. The final walking route will be about 400 meters along a narrower but well preserved trail to the site of the first engravings visited. At the end of this enjoyable visit, you'll have a deeper understanding of the region's cultural legacy and prehistoric ancestors.
After this unique moment, it's time to enjoy a tasty lunch in the museum's restaurant. Let yourself be delighted by the traditional delicacies of this region!
